Warning signs you shouldn’t wait on
Some roof symptoms are cosmetic; others are early notice of a failure that gets more expensive by the week. A handful of granules collecting in the gutter after a hard rain is normal aging. Bald patches where the mat shows through, shingles that are cupping or curling at the edges, or a ceiling stain that reappears after every storm are different — those are early notice that water is already getting past the shingle field.
Daylight visible through the attic decking, soft or spongy spots underfoot on the roof, and moss or algae streaking across a north-facing slope are all worth a look sooner rather than later. None of these are emergencies yet, but none of them improve with another season of weather either.
